Nandini cannot learn everything at once. So we asked SAP consultants the question she is asking: which Joule skill matters most?
What Are SAP Joule Skills? Two Meanings
"SAP Joule skills" means two different things: the technical actions Joule runs, and the human skills consultants need to work with Joule.
In SAP's own vocabulary, Joule skills are atomic, deterministic actions that let Joule execute predefined tasks, such as retrieving data or triggering transactions. SAP groups them as transactional, navigational, informational, and analytical. Joule agents sit above them, planning multi-step work and calling several skills in sequence.
SAP News reports more than 2,500 Joule skills and over 30 specialized agents in its Q1 2026 release highlights . Each one needs people to design, test, extend, and govern it. This article is about those human skills.

Skill 1: Prompt and Conversation Design
Prompt and conversation design is the skill of asking Joule clear, complete questions and designing conversations that reach a correct result in as few steps as possible.
It sounds simple, but it is where most users and many consultants start. SAP documents example prompts for each core Joule capability type , such as "What is the status of sales order 12345?" and "Where can I create a purchase order?" Good prompts name the business object, the number, the date,e and the outcome.
For consultants, the skill goes beyond typing. It means knowing which defaults and master data Joule needs, so users answer fewer follow-up questions.

Skill 2: Joule Studio Agent Building
Joule Studio agent building is the skill of creating custom Joule skills and agents when the delivered ones do not cover a client's process.
SAP Developers publishes tutorials to create and deploy a Joule skill and to create an agent . In May 2026, SAP News announced Joule Studio as a new fully managed offering for the full life cycle of AI agents, applications, and workflows. SAP also stated that customers and partners can get free design-time access through the end of 2026, under fair-use limits.

Skill 3: Grounding and Data Readiness
Grounding and data readiness is the skill of making Joule answer from the right company content and the right SAP data.
SAP AI Core supports grounding , where answers are based on documents retrieved from your own sources. In SAP SuccessFactors, an SAP Community setup guide shows Joule answering HR policy questions from documents, filtered by attributes such as location and department. SAP's Q1 2026 highlights also mention document grounding enhancements.
Data readiness is the other half. Duplicate materials, unclear customer names, and missing defaults make even a perfect prompt fail.

Skill 4: AI Governance and Testing
AI governance and testing is the skill of proving that Joule and its agents behave correctly, safely, and within the client's rules.
SAP News argues that trust is the main barrier to AI adoption and states that SAP builds its AI so humans keep control over critical decisions, in its article on the AI governance gap . SAP's Responsible AI page sets out its approach to AI ethics.
On projects, this skill looks practical: test scripts for Joule scenarios, role and authorization checks, approval rules for agents,s and clear records of what was tested.
