Before we understand, why SAP HANA is called as secret sauce for Analytical Workloads.

Let’s see, what is SAP HANA?

SAP HANA 1.0 is a flexible, in-memory data platform or computing appliance which allows customers to analyze large volumes of data in real-time. It is deployed as on-premise appliance or in the cloud. This platform is mainly designed to support transaction processing and also to develop and deploy the real-time analytic. It combines with SAP database software with storage, networking and server of SAP Hardware partners.

What are the technical components of SAP HANA?

The heart of SAP HANA, SAP In-memory Database 1.0 is a parallel processing data store that combines object-based, row-based and column-based storage techniques. The on-premise appliance, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 operating system is used in SAP HANA.

The other components of SAP HANA includes,

  • SAP In-memory Computing Studio
  • SAPCAR 7.10 and SAP Host Agent 7.10
  • Sybase Replication Server 15
  • SAP Landscape Transformation 1 – SHC for ABA
  • SAP HANA Load Controller 1.00

In the market, the other database systems are either good at analytical workloads or transactional workloads but not both. User must separate workloads into different databases while transactional DBMS products are used. In this case, user must perform the following functions namely:

  1. Extract data from your Transactional system (ERP)
  2. Transform the data for reporting
  3. Load into reporting database (BW)

Even after user performs this task, the reporting database still requires significant effort in creating and maintaining tuning structures for moderate performance.

But SAP HANA 1.0 combines the best of both the worlds. It has a hybrid structure for processing transactional and analytical workloads. User need not to build traditional building structures to enable reporting or to load data from transctional database to reporting database. SAP HANA provides lower Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) with high-speed to the companies, by combining two landscapes such as On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and On-line Transaction Processing (OLTP) into a single database.

As SAP HANA resides on in-memory all the time, the additional complex calculations, functions and data operations are performed directly on the data in the database. The movement of data between the applications and the database is performed with less cost and time.

SAP HANA is responsible for simplification and optimization of data layer to attain very high speed by removing multiple technology layers of technology and human effort.

In market, other database engines might provide one or the other benefit that SAP HANA provides. However, none of them can deliver all. SAP BW on SAP HANA, Accelerators on SAP HANA and native SAP HANA applications can provide advantage of real-time computing to the customers.
