What is the transition phase from Quality analyst to Business Analyst?

qaAs a QA analyst, you have the expertise to identify the snags as you systematically monitor and evaluate various aspects of the project. This experience will aid in understanding the competencies necessary for a successful business analyst and acts as a first step towards achieving the goal of becoming a business analyst.

STEP – 1 Express motivation and make behavioural changes

If you are already involved with the project life cycle as a QA, it is a perfect opportunity to show your enthusiasm at your work environment to understand various aspects of a BA. Do everything and anything that will set you to pursue your career as a business analyst. Develop positive working relations with IT and other business personnel and express your genuine desire as you network with them. Without stepping on their feet, ask them questions relating to the field. Attend project meetings and actively participate by giving suggestions and asking questions, try to make an impression by preparing well for the meeting and understanding the project domain. Those who are presently not involved with any project should also aggressively start networking with the professionals in the same line of work.

STEP – 2 Competencies required in succeeding as a Business Analyst

Though there is no well-defined role of a business analyst, the most essential skills include: Understanding the business domain and communicating effectively (spoken & written) with the clients and other stakeholders; defining project scope and requirements and identifying solutions.

STEP-3 Willingness to learn

Despite the fact that you already have knowledge about the industry, you may still need some formal training to master some or all of the above required skills. Depending on your level of understanding and present knowledge, you can choose a course at an entry level or more in depth that many institutes offer online. By enrolling in a course you will be exposed to real-time projects; interacting with like minded people in the class also brings out a variety of discussions about the subject. Lastly, as you begin to understand these new skills, you will start noticing how they are applied in the projects you are already involved and start building confidence while discussing in project meetings and other networking opportunities. It is a great way to make a positive impression and a beginning for opportunities as business analyst.
