What a Business Analyst needs to know at the start of the project

During the beginning of the project, a business analyst must collect the most important information required for completing project. They are often called as an interpreter for project’s client ensuring that the requirements are gathered at the initial stage of the project. Below are some of the basic things that a business analyst must know before the start of the project.

Project managers along with business analysts are involved in the process of selecting the right team members. Every single member of the project team is given pre-defined roles enabling them to analyze their position and abilities to fit in this project. Business analysts must possess strong communication skills to communicate the roles and responsibilities to the team. Is the team technically equipped for this project?

As project is the mix of various fields, the team must consist of mixed talents to achieve completion with ease. By defining the roles and project requirements, analyst must be able to build a cohesive team. The team should be better assessed on the skills according to the project. Time can be saved later if the right team members are chosen at the beginning of the project.

Are the requirements defined?

For any project, solid requirements form the basis. These requirements include input from customer, stakeholders, project manager, and the management. Business analysts must understand the demand of the project and its budget. Requirements need to be detailed and documented. Since a business analyst acts as an intermediary, project manager depends on a business analyst to decide if the scheduled project fits the requirement.

Do they have problem-solving abilities?

A business analyst, project manager and the team members must possess the abilities to handle any issues involved within the project and the team. He or she may confront many technical challenges; a more realistic approach to solving any challenges can take the project forward. Therefore, training would definitely enhance the skills and help in completing the project within the stipulated timeframe. Sometimes, customer training makes a difference to project like reviewing of requirements, project budget and timeline.

Eventually, it is necessary for the business analysts to be confident to provide a more realistic approach to the organization. A business analyst must generalize before the project is pulled off. 1. Your Resume is much more than a dustbin
Your Resume should not be filled up with everything. Don’t make it complex. There’s no need to be extremely honest and include a complete catalog of work experiences and skills. Instead include selective experience and skills which may necessary for the type of BA job you are applying.
  1. Your Resume must highlight your business analysis accomplishments
Most of the recruiters skip lengthy career objective part and so your resume must have the ability to drag their attention. To do so you need to highlight your business analysis accomplishments and make it crystal clear that you’re qualified for the job. If not, there is a high chance your resume will be thrown in the “No” pile.
  1. Using Business Analysis Terminology is important
As you are applying for Business Analyst, you must use Business Analysis Terminologies while exposing your capabilities. It reflects your handiness with the subject. It’s highly suggested that you not only write it but you must know the key concepts because in most of the cases, recruiter may like to have a discussion on terminologies with you.
  1. No one can write your BA Resume, but you
You may hire a resume writer but after being a Business Analyst, you will have to write a lot of documentation. Resume writer may not have understanding of Business Analysis profession, so he may tweak your resume.
  1. Using bullet points to highlight your projects, achievements, and contribution is better
Showcasing your achievements and responsibilities using bullet points one by one clearly is better. You must be prepared for cross questions on that. You must highlight your past projects, your contribution to the company and what you’ve done to take the company to the next level.

Were you just an employee or the pillar?

This question is deep but it’s very important. Recruiters prefer hiring somebody who is extra-ordinary. Be prepared.
We hope this article will help you in constructing an effective resume before landing a  job interview.

Role of a Business Analyst in Software Projects

Software projects are considered as the responsibility of the technical team of the company and to successfully accomplish the project they rely on the best techies in their arsenal. Hence, they focus on hiring or retaining skilled IT professionals of that particular domain as per the requirement of the software project.

Business Analyst also plays equivalent role in achieving the milestone.

Business Analysts work with key line-of-business executives and users from the very beginning till the end to understand, implement, support and deliver the Software Project as desired. BA’s visualize the whole thing and works along with the business side as well as the technology side of the project.

In Software Projects, BA’s role is very vast, but to simplify and make you easily understand, it is broken down below describing the whole development process into the three major Phases as follows:

Now, let’s see it in detail.

  1. Initiating the Software Project: Firstly, Business Analysts have to work with the stakeholders or key business partners to study the systems and operations and identify preliminary issues pertaining to the problem. Then it is decided whether to fund the project or not. If decided to fund the project then the next step is to formulate and communicate the vision for the project and plan road-map of the project meetings with key stakeholders and business executives.

Next step is  brainstorming sessions, perform gap analysis and look into the problem at different angles. There needs  to be  prepared documentation of both the functional and nonfunctional requirements. One of the most important parts of the Business Analysis process is to avoid the “Unnecessary” which saves time and money.

  1. Spelling out the Details of the Software Project: After kicking off the project, the second step is to elaborate all the details and requirements to the implementation team and help them understand the technical aspects of the solution.

Based on the requirements and details the following is created:

  1. Prototype
  2. Use Cases
  3. Wireframes
  4. Mockups
  5. Screens
  6. SRS (System Requirements Specification)
  7. BRD (Business Requirements Documents)
  8. Data or Process Models (for large projects)

When the technical team has all the details about what is to be designed and starts implementing the software solution, and the stakeholders and business executives are signed off, Business Analyst’s role shifts from an active one to reactive one.

  1. Supporting the implementation of the Software Project: BA’s are not involved directly in this phase. Now, BA’s role is just to support the implementation process unless any new requirement occurs in between the process.

After the implementation has been done, the active role of Business Analyst begins again. BA conducts functional and usability testing of the implemented software solution and recommends corrective and preventive actions, if necessary. BA works with stakeholders to validate the requirements via reviews, walkthroughs and play acting.

During the implementation process if new needs or requirements occur, the Business Analyst may initiate new projects and then this cycle will repeats.
