What a Business Analyst needs to know at the start of the project

Typically, an experienced business analyst is a liaison between the project manager and the project team members. During the beginning of the project, a business analyst must collect the most important information required for completing project. They are often called as an interpreter for project’s client ensuring that the requirements are gathered at the initial stage of the project. Below are some of the basic things that a business analyst must know before the start of the project.

Is the team ready?

Project managers along with business analysts are involved in the process of selecting the right team members. Every single member of the project team is given pre-defined roles enabling them to analyze their position and abilities to fit in this project. Business analysts must possess strong communication skills to communicate the roles and responsibilities to the team. At the same time, he or she must be a good listener to grasp any issues related to a project and the team.

Is the team technically equipped for this project?

As project is the mix of various fields, the team must consist of mixed talents to achieve completion with ease. By defining the roles and project requirements, analyst must be able to build a cohesive team. The team should be better assessed on the skills according to the project. Time can be saved later if the right team members are chosen at the beginning of the project.

Are the requirements defined?

For any project, solid requirements form the basis. These requirements include input from customer, stakeholders, project manager, and the management. Business analysts must understand the demand of the project and its budget. Requirements need to be detailed and documented. Since a business analyst acts as an intermediary, project manager depends on a business analyst to decide if the scheduled project fits the requirement.

Do they have problem-solving abilities?

A business analyst, project manager and the team members must possess the abilities to handle any issues involved within the project and the team. He or she may confront many technical challenges; a more realistic approach to solving any challenges can take the project forward. Proper planning helps to meet the requirements of both project and client.

Is training needed?

Certainly, a project is the technical implementation of skills that meets the requirements. Therefore, training would definitely enhance the skills and help in completing the project within the stipulated timeframe. Sometimes, customer training makes a difference to project like reviewing of requirements, project budget and timeline.

Eventually, it is necessary for the business analysts to be confident to provide a more realistic approach to the organization. A business analyst must generalize before the project is pulled off. Most schedules and decision-making skills are performed by business analysts. Transforming any small opportunity into a representative from and acquiring the project for the growth of the organization is made possible by an efficient business analyst.

Important Areas Where SAP HANA is implemented

Business cases where SAP HANA proved its efficiency

The first of the HANA deployments were the business cases that required real time analytics. For example, DataMart and Data Warehouses. Because, the benefits are there right out the box. Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) like SAP BW can run very fast with a simple database swap.

With a transactional application like Finance or Supply Chain, most things run a little better from a simple database swap (SAP claim 50% faster for their own core finance). The real benefits come when logic from the applications are optimized and pushed down to the database level, from simplification of the apps (SAP is building a simplified version of their Business Suite), or from ancillary benefits like real-time operational reporting, real-time supply chain management or real-time offer management.

Most importantly, unlike the other database systems in the market, HANA supports all applications on the same instance of data, at the same time.  Now, you can get rid of traditional copying, transforming and re-organizing data all over the enterprise to meet the needs of different applications. HANA perfectly serves the needs of all applications with one “system of record” instance.

What SAP Applications run on SAP HANA?

SAP CEO Bill McDermott says, ‘’HANA is attached to everything we have.’’

Today, all the major SAP Applications run on the SAP HANA platform. They include the SAP Business Suite (ERP, CRM, PLM, and SCM) and the SAP BW Data Warehouse.

The SAP HANA platform is designed to support the BI Suite which includes Business Objects Enterprise, Data Services and SAP Lumira.

SAP HANA powers a complete set of applications such as SAP Accelerated Trade Promotion Planning, SAP Collection Insight, SAP Convergent Pricing Simulation, SAP Customer Engagement Intelligence, SAP Demand Signal Management, SAP Assurance and Compliance Software, SAP Liquidity Risk Management, SAP Operational Process Intelligence and SAP Tax Declaration Framework for Brazil.

The cloud portfolio of SAP runs on HANA, along with the HANA Cloud Platform and SAP Business ByDesign. The latest set of apps which are on the verge of getting migrated to the HANA platform include Ariba and SuccessFactors Apps.Who should consider using SAP HANA?

An organization should strongly consider implementing SAP HANA, if:

  • There are few reports or analytic applications that are currently running very slowly and not getting the optimal business benefit.
  • They are constantly facing unacceptable downtimes, where your data warehouse is not available due to the need to load data.
  • They are in need to see current, till-the-moment data.
  • There is a frequent need to create new reports or analytical applications.

Even if organizations do not see a requirement for SAP HANA at this moment, they could still benefit from it, with a very thought of using it in the near future If they just go to their sales representatives of Oracle, or IBM, or Microsoft, and tell them that they are in the endeavour of migrating to HANA in the near future, they will be offered with a competitive price on licenses and also free maintenance of your current database. With this trend, it seems like soon most of the organizations will migrate to SAP HANA in the near future.

The Future of SAP HANA

In this age of digitization, it became important and necessary for SAP, the premium ERP software to come up with the next generation business suite, and that is SAP HANA. In 2011, HANA (High performance Analytics Appliance) was available as in-memory computing database. The HANA database was used to power SAP BW to make analytical real-time reporting and reduce latency in the next year. In 2013, SAP HANA cloud services were introduced to power the SAP Business Suite. The S/4 HANA was released towards the end of 2015 and provided extremely user friendly User Experience (UX), simplified data models and a variety of cloud deployment options such as Public Cloud, On-Premise or Hybrid Cloud.

SAP has simplified their data structures with most of the database tables in columnar store and elimination of row store. This has resulted in dramatic increase in performance and faster results when running reports. SAP Fiori UX is the new user experience of SAP to business users for all lines of business across devices and deployments. The design is based on role-based, responsive, simple, coherent and delightful. The SAP S/4 HANA Cloud Platform is the solution for the Internet of Things (IoT) and provides the data driven intelligence business where the devices or machines will be connected by sensors. SAP S/4 HANA is very easy to adopt with quicker implementation cycles.

As we are entering into the middle of the year 2016, predictions for S/4 HANA is very clear – more HANA, more analytics. The Cloud for Analytics is a combo of Business Intelligence (BI), planning, budgeting, and predictive analytics. S/4 HANA is expected to bring more project systems, quality management, and sales and distribution functionality. The Hybris tools for the “Simplified Front Office” will usually become available including Hybris Profile and Hybris Customer Experience. The Cloud for Analytics in 2016 is predicted to have the power of broadened predictive analytics capabilities, scaled out modelling and what/if analysis for planning.

SAP HANA Skills Required in Future

Vowing to the efficiency of processing huge business data in a few seconds, SAP HANA is becoming the most sought after Database Management System (DBMS) for most of the companies today. A lot of companies that use ERP systems that come from SAP, are finding HANA very compatible. Thus, companies who are using SAP functional tools are plugging in HANA. As a result, the jobs in HANA are increasing.

On the same note, the in-memory architecture and efficiency of SAP HANA has drawn attention of Fortune 500 companies who are handling enormous data on a daily basis. The growth curve of installation and usage of HANA is rising. Henceforth, the technology has become one of the hottest trends in the current job market.

Some of the top companies that have switched over to SAP HANA are Asian Paints, Mercedes-AMG, Vodafone, EMC, eBay, Colgate Palmolive, Coca-Cola, Accenture, SanDisk, Unilever, Lenovo, Infosys, Cisco and many more.

Now, these companies certainly need HANA experts. The most popular jobs in SAP HANA include, SAP HANA DB Admin, SAP HANA Modeler and SAP HANA Application Developer.

SAP HANA DB Admin: As a SAP HANA Database Administrator, an individual generally does HANA installation, upgrades, configuration, performance optimization, backup and recovery and replication process. The employers expect the prospective candidate to know and be aware of some of these tasks.

SAP HANA Modeler: A SAP HANA Modeler should have an idea about different data provisioning methods that are available to fetch data from different sources to SAP HANA, build information models (modelling objects) based on business requirements, Performance tuning, Data Security, Different Reporting tools that can connect to SAP HANA and much more.

SAP HANA Application Developer: For a developer role, there are no such fixed tasks. It would depend on the nature of the project development and in which area the developer is working. It could be a functionality, design by ABAP, or some application development with Java, could be user experience design that is a UI deign by JQuery, HTML5, CSS etc. After the introduction of HANA Cloud, even a professional with developer role would get an opportunity to find work related cloud application deployment.

As SAP HANA is making technological advancements, the area of SAP HANA is becoming vast with Cloud being introduced, the concept of Internet of Things (iOT) coming up, and beginning of apps development for iOT. Henceforth, there several works would open up for the role of developers.

Growing Career Opportunities for Project Management Professionals in various Industries

Projects play a vital role in a company’s growth. The increasing number of projects in various industries has led to the shortage of skills in the current labour pool. This has given a rise for the necessity of filling the skill gap, for efficient management of projects. For this, the companies are in need of Project Management Professionals or PMPs.

Project management is a skill, and it has to be acquired through a structured learning program. The Project Management Institute or PMI offers PMP Certification, which gives an ability to the prospective Project managers, to efficiently meet the strategic requirements of projects and confidently face the employers of various industries across the globe.

Information Technology

From the last decade, Information technology has opened up several job opportunities. In the United States, IT generates the highest number of jobs, as compared to any other industry, according to an IT Research Firm, IDC. Bigger IT companies in the USA, are taking over the smaller ones, thus expanding their business and operations. The expansion in operations has led an outsourcing, to the emerging markets in Asia. This has resulted in the hiring of resources from various cultural backgrounds. As a result, the IT companies are in need of Project managers, who have a standardized set of skills for managing a team and carrying out projects successfully.

Oil and Energy

Recent discoveries in the field of oil, gases and energy have opened up several career opportunities for Project managers. The discovery of new oil fields and advanced fossil fuel extraction technology has given rise to several projects. For example, recent discovery of an inactive oil field, off the coast of Brazil, and energy fields in the North Sea region of Europe, has a good potential for becoming the biggest oil producers. However, Brazil and European countries are facing a shortage of skill, including project management skills in the current work force. The gap is getting bridged through the hiring of people with good project management skills.

Improved healthcare at lower cost is giving rise to a tough competition in the healthcare industry. In the US, Patient Protection and Affordable Care is very crucial for private insurance companies. Thus, by 2017, there will be a huge generation of healthcare projects, which will in turn generate a revenue of USD$23 billion, according to CIO insights. In addition, healthcare sector is making a shift towards having digital records, thus resulting in the use of mobile devices, social media and data analytics. Henceforth, there will be a huge requirement for Project managers with IT skills in the healthcare industry.

Defence companies have been operating very efficiently with less number of staffs and complex regulations. This requires a strategic vision, for identifying key projects and then driving them towards achieving strategic goals. Such a competitive environment is creating a need for Project management Professionals, for streamlining the movement of US Air Force equipment, supplies and staffs around the globe.

From the past decade, Global construction market has seen a tremendous growth. By 2025, the construction industry is predicted to grow more than 70 percent and the major growth will be concentrated in three countries, namely China, United States and India, according to PwC Survey. The project management as a profession, is not as grown in Asia, as it is seen in developed countries. India, which is getting overpopulated, is facing an issue with regard to the infrastructure to suffice the growth. This issue has created a need for more than 1 million skilled Project managers for managing infrastructure projects, requiring compliance with complex regulations.

The increasing accounting scandals have resulted in the increase of complex compliance projects for financial institutions. Many of these organizations are now ready for a stringent auditing process, for focusing on their growth. This has given a rise to the necessity of bridging the talent gap. More than half of all the financial institutions’ CEOs are experiencing a shortage of key skills in the available workforce, which has led to a threat to their growth, according to a global PwC survey. Finance jobs in risk management now require candidates to have a degree in finance, along with certifications and skills in project management.

The PMP certification offered by PMI is a program, which does not focus on one industry or domain, unlike most of other certifications does. It focusses purely on the development of project management skill, a niche skill, which can be applied to the success of any project across various industries and domains.
