Why Business Requirement Document is important in Successful implementation?

This article briefly tells you about the importance of Business Requirement Document (BRD) in successful implementations.

Before we understand why it is important, let us see an introduction to Business Requirement Document in Business Analysis.

A BRD details the project business solutions including the customer needs and expectation documentation. It is the widely accepted logically structured document for listing the project requirements which defines the deliverables to gain more value to the project. This assists with the Project Management and will be implemented throughout the life cycle of the project. It has both functional and non-functional requirements which lead to creation or updating of the product.

The System Requirement Specification (SRS) or System Requirement Document (SRD) and Functional Specification Document (FSD) are the two important variants of BRD. It is the mode of the communication in completion of the project.

The main objectives of the Business Requirement Document are:

  1. It should be simple and all the stakeholders must agree to BRD.
  2. It should contain more technical requirements compared to business requirements.
  3. It describes “What to achieve rather than how to achieve” is the main goal of BRD.
  4. It defines the business needs in a clear and concise way.
  5. It should have a logical input so that output of one phase can be used as input to the next phase of the project.

In Business Analysis, describing the end solutions to the business requirement and satisfying the customer needs are the purpose of a Business Requirement Document. It refers to the details of the existing business states and the future planned tasks by the business owners. Before kick-off the project, the stakeholders involving in the development of the project must agree at all common points of the project as they can be used as the base of the project development.

The stakeholders involved in the development of the Business Requirement Document are Business Owner Representative, Development Team Representative, Subject Matter Expert, Maintenance team representative.

According to the Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed (RACI) matrix at the document designing, each of the stakeholders are assigned to the specific roles and should share their views.

The Business Requirement Document includes the following key sections namely:

  1. Project background
  2. Business goals and Objectives
  3. Stakeholders
  4. Requirement scope
  5. Functional Requirements
  6. Data Requirements
  7. Non-functional Requirements
  8. Interface Requirements
  9. Business Glossary/Definitions
  10. Dependencies of existing systems and Assumptions

Importance of BRD in a Project

Interim deliverables are produced on various activities as each project proceeds through the Project Life Cycle (PLC). These deliverables will contribute to the building of the final project deliverable known as project’s end product which is the single defining element for which the project was undertaken.

A complete and accurate description specifying, what the final project deliverable will look like when completed and accepted is crucial to a project’s success. The project team members will perform a systematic investigative approach to extract, capture and record those capabilities in order to develop the description completely. This is mainly written and maintained by stakeholders to solve a problem or achieve an objective. The formally approved Business Requirement Document becomes the basis for the Project’s design and development efforts.

How m-learning is different from e-learning?

A decade ago, educators considered all smart phones and tablets are deplorable distraction in class room. Now-a-days, rather than snatching those devices away, all tech-savvy teachers trying to engage students by incorporating learning methods. Even though, smartphones, tablets, and other computing devices are used in universal implementation, these devices are also used as learning tool by exploring emerging technologies.

In education technology revolution, e-learning and m-learning are the two important buzz words which characterizes the tech-savvy teacher’s whole raft of idea and resources. But the two terms are always used with some confusion about the differences between the two modes of training.

Many people assume that e-learning and m-learning are same. However, designing effective courses for these two modes can differ in many aspects.

Before we get to know the difference between e-learning and m-learning, we shall see the definition of each of these.

E-learning refers to electronically supported learning methodology in which digital communication, internet or the electronic devices are used to support the process of learning. This method includes Computer Based Training (CBT) and Web Based Training (WBT).

M-learning refers to electronically supported learning using portable devices which allows student to learn in different environments at any flexible time. This mode of learning is a subset of e-learning which is growing rapidly in the past few years.

This is also considered as the extension of e-learning but the quality online training will be provided by delivering the course with awareness of the limitations and the benefits of the portable devices used.

Now, let us see the difference between e-learning and m-learning:

As you read these differences, you may start to wonder which mode of learning and Learning Management System (LMS) is better than the other. Fortunately, both the modes of learning are the effective and powerful modes for training people.

All about Dynamic Testing and it’s Types in Quality Assurance

Dynamic Testing and it’s Types in Quality Assurance

Most of us have an experience that the software did not work properly as expected and it impacts more on organisation. This article sheds light on dynamic testing and its various types.Let’s see an introduction about dynamic testing in QA.

Dynamic testing is also known as Dynamic Analysis, mainly used to test the software by executing it. This also checks for dynamic behaviour of the code. To compile and execute the software, variable quantities such as response time, memory usage, CPU usage, and overall performance of the software will be analysed.

This involves working with software, the various combination of input values are provided and checked with the expected output. In verification and validation, this testing type is the validation part.

Quality assurance work flow

Now let us see some of the dynamic testing methods in-detail:

1.Unit Testing

Unit testing is a process in software development in which small individual and independent parts of an application called units are tested. Units are the smallest testable part of the Software system. This verifies the smallest entity in any software.

A system should be tested individually before integrating it because once the system is integrated; it becomes difficult to differentiate the occurrence of an error in which unit. Hence unit testing is mandatory before integrating the units.

2. Integration Testing

In this method of testing, all the individual tested units are groups and the interface between the units are tested. This is mainly used to identify the problems in interface when two units are integrated. This is carried after unit testing.

The three main important approaches in integration testing are:

  • Top-down approach
  • Bottom-up approach
  • Big bang approach·

3. System Testing

System testing is testing the behaviour of the whole system or software as defined in the Software Requirement Specification (SRS). This is primarily employed to verify the fulfilment of customer requirements. This testing method is carried after integration testing. This test method also checks for functional and non-functional software requirements.

Even though the system testing differs from organization to organization, the following key testing types which need to be covered in system testing are listed below:

  • Sanity Testing
  • Usability Testing
  • Stress Testing
  • Performance Testing
  • Regression Testing
  • Security Testing
  • Maintenance Testing
  • Accessibility Testing

4.Acceptance Testing

This type of testing is carried after system testing. During this type of testing most of the major bugs and defects have been fixed. Establishing confidence in delivering quality software or system that it meets the customer requirements is the main goal of Acceptance testing.

For Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) software’s are meant for mass marketing needs by the potential users. There are two types of Acceptance testing namely:

  • Alpha testing is applicable for softwares that are developed for mass marketing. This is conducted at the developer site, potential users site or developers organization which invites to use the system and report defects.
  • Beta Testing is also known as field testing performed by existing users or customers at external sites with developers. This is used to determine that the software satisfies the customer requirements.

Top 10 Business Analyst Questions to crack BA Interview

Organizations started hiring a group of technical experts who knew to design systems and also to translate the requirements into lines of code. These experts are called System Analyst.  These professionals also helped in developing systems but in an unorganized way. Even though they had proficiency in developing systems they lack in business acumen. In this case, there is a requirement that can analyse the need for the system, and then Business Analysts evolved and had been felt in the IT industry.
