What are the most important skills for a business analyst? There are a lot of skills that have been listed in the Business Analysis Book of Knowledge (BABoK). But what critical skills make a business analyst focus on to stand out in a crowd?
So these critical skills are needed to stand out in the crowd: The following four are:
- System thinking
- Critical thinking
- Pattern thinking
Systems thinking involve interrelationships. These are the interrelationships between the single individual components given within the system boundaries and those between the outside boundaries. It is holistic thinking. This involves seeing the component as interconnected whole instead of individual parts. System thinking also analyses how the system behaves when the components are working together.
Critical thinking helps to evaluate the information that has been received to ensure it is logical and true. Business analysts who practice critical thinking generally do not arrive at conclusions without proper facts and careful thought. This process helps in quality assurance check. Critical thinking helps to achieve a long way towards the target.
Pattern thinking helps to address the organization of information. Pattern thinking is also the ability to form a group of information into ‘buckets’ in which all the elements in each bucket share common things with other elements present in the bucket.
Communication is the heart of the business analyst role. A business analyst is the bridge between the stakeholders and the experts in the organization. Communication plays a major role between them. IT involves inbound and outbound flow of information. Hence a BA must effectively communicate.
While there are skills a business analyst should have, these basic skills shall help him stand out in the crowd.

- Critical thinking – helps to ensure the accuracy between the information exchanged.
- Pattern thinking – helps to organize the available information for easier understanding.
